Annual International Academic and Practical Theology Conference

“The Identity of the People of God in the Bible, History and Theology”

Conference Location:Narvskiy Prospect, 13B, St. Petersburg, Russia 190020

Two primary characteristics of postmodernism are the revision and blurring of borders (national, cultural, and personal), and change in the processes of formation, existence, and reproduction of the identities both of individuals and entire communities. Globalization, social mobility, interpenetration of cultures, secularization, and the emergence of new trends in Christianity exacerbate the questions of self-understanding and self-identification for believers – “Who am I?” and “Who are they?” (i.e. the world, society). Christians of various confessions are rethinking their historical, social, and ideological-theological roots, looking for new language to express and convey the essence of their faith. As a result, in recent decades, the theme of the identity of the people of God – that is, the question of what it meant to be a part of the people of Israel during the Old Testament, a follower of Jesus in the first and second centuries, a Christian in different periods of Church history, and what it means for believers today – is one of the most popular and pressing topics in the field of theological studies.

During the conference, topics related to various aspects of identity will be considered and discussed: how the identity of God’s people is reflected in the Holy Scriptures, how it is understood in theology, and how it has been expressed in the practice of the Christian Church throughout history and today.

Conference attendees will include leading biblical scholars, historians, and theologians from Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States.
